Ghadeer Dawwas receives second-best abstract at international conference

Ghadeer Dawwas, M.B.A., BSPharm, a fifth-year graduate student in the department of pharmaceutical outcomes and policy, received an award for having the second-best abstract at the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology’s 33rd annual conference in Montreal, Canada. The research, which she presented in August, assessed the cardiovascular safety of sodium glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2) versus sulfonylureas in patients with type II diabetes.

“The cardioprotective effect of SGLT2 inhibitors has been demonstrated in large clinical trials, but evidence from real-world data is lacking,” Dawwas said. Her research helps provide much-needed real-world data. Ghadeer works under the supervision of Haesuk Park, Ph.D., an assistant professor of pharmaceutical outcomes and policy.

The UF College of Pharmacy has an ISPE student chapter, and its students and faculty regularly present at the society’s conferences. The organization receives about 400 abstract submissions at its conferences every year, demonstrating the value of Dawwas’ research.
