New students that are funded through a Graduate Assistantship (GA) will be contacted by the COP Human Resources team to complete their hiring process.
GatorGradCare Health Insurance
GatorGradCare health insurance is available exclusively to Graduate Assistants, Teaching Assistants, and Research Assistants on appointment (.25 FTE or greater) at the University of Florida. Find out more about GatorGradCare here.
Enrollment is NOT automatic! Newly hired graduate assistants have 60 days from their date of hire to enroll in GatorGradCare if they want to participate. The enrollment portal in myUFL will become available after the GA job appointment is entered and active in the UF PeopleSoft/payroll system.
GatorGradCare Enrollment Walkthrough
If you enroll in GatorGradCare, this coverage will meet UF’s mandatory health insurance requirement. Students who have health insurance, including those enrolled in GatorGradCare, must complete the health insurance waiver once a year to opt out of the automatic student healthcare plan. This waiver must be completed by the Fee Payment Deadline, typically 10 days after the start of classes.
Registration Requirements
Graduate Assistants must comply with the UF Graduate School’s registration requirements to remain on their GA appointment and receive a tuition waiver. All GA’s are registered for 9 credits in Fall and Spring terms, and 6 credits in Summer C. The Office of Graduate Education will monitor GA registration each term, but it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to ensure compliance.
Tuition and Student Fees
Graduate Assistants receive a tuition waiver each term, which covers the full-time tuition cost of their enrollment (9 credits in Fall and Spring, 6 credits in Summer C). However, students are responsible for the fees associated with each credit hour of registration. Current tuition and fee costs are posted each year on the University Bursar website.
Graduate Assistants United
Graduate Assistants United serves as the labor union for all Graduate Assistants, and works to improve GA employment rights and benefits at UF. The 2021-2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement, which outlines the expectations and rights of your GA appointment, can be found here.
